The National Diabetes Data Group Criteria

The National Diabetes Data Group criteria were developed in 1979 and are also based on the results of a 3-hour 100-gram OGTT. According to these criteria, a diagnosis of GDM is made if two or more of the following values are exceeded:

  • Fasting: ≥105 mg/dL (5.8 mmol/L)
  • 1 hour: ≥190 mg/dL (10.6 mmol/L)
  • 2 hour: ≥165 mg/dL (9.2 mmol/L)
  • 3 hour: ≥145 mg/dL (8.0 mmol/L)

Diagnostic Criteria for GDM

The diagnostic criteria for GDM have evolved over time. In 2013, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommended using a one-step approach for diagnosis of GDM. This involves performing a 75-gram OGTT at 24-28 weeks of gestation, with the following diagnostic criteria:

  • Fasting: ≥92 mg/dL (5.1 mmol/L)
  • 1 hour: ≥180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L)
  • 2 hour: ≥153 mg/dL (8.5 mmol/L)

These criteria are based on the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes rather than the risk of future diabetes in the mother.
